Under the influence of Greek dialectics Roman jurisprudence evolved into a genuine science. How strong the influence really was, still is a matter of research. In this book, Karlheinz Hülser presents three case studies. Referring to Q. Mucius Scaevola pont. and Servius Sulpicius Rufus, to Proculus, and to Ulpianus, Hülser shows that, from the Stoa and the Platonic Academy, the Romans not only took up the applications of dialectics; yet, above all they learned to appreciate logic’s dimension of reflection.
