Charles Howard Candler Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Emory University, ist Autor von ›Dilthey, Philosopher of the Human Studies‹ (nominiert für den Pulitzer-Preis und ins Deutsche übersetzt) und ›Imagination and Interpretation in Kant: the Hermeneutical Import of the Critique of Jugment‹ (Deutsch: ›Einbildungskraft und Interpretation‹). Makkreel ist Mitherausgeber von Diltheys ›Selected Works‹, von ›Dilthey and Phenomenology, The Ethics of History‹ und ›Neo-Kantianism and Contemporary Philosophy‹. Er war Herausgeber des ›Journal of the the History of Philosophy‹ (1983–1998) und erhielt Forschungsstipendien von der NEH, dem DAAD und der Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung sowie der Thyssen und Volkswagen-Stiftung.
