Islamic authorities agree that this Arabic edition of the Glorious Qur’an is of the highest quality in respect of text and bookdesign. The text has been prepared under the supervision of Sheikh Ismael al Sadawi of Al-Azhar University in Cairo. The films and plates were proofed and finally approved by document for reproduction by the Islamic Academy of Al-Azhar. The beautiful, clear Arabic type was handset at the onset of this century and reproduces the text in an extraordinarily legible manner. The whole book design is in keeping with the famous typography. The splendid titlepages, the frames and ornamentations that embellish all the pages and endpapers have been printed in gold, blue and black. The printing colours and the woodfree off-white paper have been carefully composed and were produced especially for this Qur’an edition under the application of the highest technical and aesthetic standards. The design of the cover is based on a Moroccan binding from the 9th century Hegira (15th A.D.), adapted by Dr. Mahmood Rasch. The leather edition is bound in real sheepskin and has a ten-fold blind and 14 carat gold stamping. The cloth-bound volumes were done in hardwearing blue linen embossed in blue and gold-bronze. All volumes have the traditional Islamic Lisan (flap), also embossed. The volumes are gilt-edged. Each of these precious books is protected in a specially manufactured traditional linen bag. This edition of the Qur’an is the work of three years of painstaking work by the Islamic Texts Society (Cambridge) in cooperation with frommann-holzboog.
