Louis Gerard Kelly
Louis Gerard Kelly retired from the University of Ottawa, Canada in June 1996, where he held a joint appointment as Professor in the Departments of Classica and Linguistics. He took his BA, MA in French, and a Diploma of Honours in Latin from the University of New Zealand between 1957 and 1960, and his doctorate from University Laval, Quebec, Canada in 1967. His doctoral thesis was published as 25 Centuries of Language Teaching in 1969. From June 1965 to 1967 he directed the linguistics research section of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism set up by the Canadian government. He then took up an appointment in the University of Ottawa where he initiated programmes in linguistics and translation. His major publications are The True Interpreter (1979) on the history of translation, and editions of Quaestiones de Modis Significandi ascribed to Albertus Magnus (1977), the English translation of Basil Valentine’s Triumphant Chariot of Antimony ascribed to the seventeenth-century apothecary, Richard Russell (1990), and the Summa de Modis Significandi of Michel de Marbais (1995). He is now attached to Darwin College in the University of Cambridge.
