This volume contains those previously unpublished letters which have been found up to now written by Martha Hauptmann, née Thienemann (1862–1939), Carl Hauptmann‘s first wife, to her husband. In the course of the research carried out for this edition, the collections in the Carl-Hauptmann-Archiv of the manuscript department at the University of Wrocław/Breslau, in the Archiv der Akademie der Künste in Berlin, in the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Museum Erkner, in the collection of Carl Hauptmann-Nitsche in the Deutschen Literaturarchiv Marbach/N. and in the Carl und Gerhart Hauptmann-Haus in Szklarska Poręba/Schreiberhau were evaluated. Martha Hauptmann’s letters to her husband are a rich source of information on Carl Hauptmann‘s life and work. They deal with Hauptmann‘s development from a scientist to a writer, his family life, Hauptmann‘s literary work, in which Martha Hauptmann took an active interest even after the divorce. The exact transcription of the letters is accompanied by a commentary dealing with the corresponding subjects. Martha Hauptmann’s autobiographical ›Lebensfaden‹ (Threads of Life) is included in the appendix.
