Of all the classical German philosophers, it was only F. W. J. Schelling who kept a diary for many years. 41 books (calendars) have been handed down, encompassing the years between 1809 and his death in 1854. The notes refer to the entire spectrum of his life, ranging from the state of his health to his personal dealings with colleagues and politicians and to the extensive preliminary reflections on his philosophy. The diaries thus provide some insight into the philosopher’s place of work. Some sources and suppositions which were not in his published works are revealed here. This gives a clearer picture of Schelling as a person and as a philosopher.
