The writings, records and excerpts on poetology, literary criticism and literary history, on which the second volume is focused, are closely tied to an anthropology which rests on the immediacy of the existential experience. They show Herder on the way to a sense-specific theory of the arts which in its aesthetic dimensions also reveals the stages of development and the experimental phases of his historical hermeneutics.
