This lexicon is a collection of the actual data and facts available on German literature from its beginnings up to the present time and enables quick access for the reader. It provides the most important features of each author in a biography, information on the works which is as complete as possible, a literary-historical classification and scholarly description (section A) as well as a list of the literature for research (section B).

As a supplement to the customary publication of the DDL entries in the lexicon, each in installments of 80 pages, separate hardcover volumes will be published for a selection of important authors for whom there is a particularly large amount of material. This will make it possible to deal with especially important authors outside the framework of the usual alphabetical order of the entries. We are offering these as supplementary volumes, in a special design with dust jackets, to be purchased separately and not as one of the installments.
