From 1810 onwards, Schelling worked for almost two decades on his project »Weltalter« (World Ages), which was intended to comprehensively develop the approach of a »narrative philosophy« encompassing nature and history, divided into three books on the past, present, and future. This volume contains the two versions of the first book of Weltalter that Schelling himself provisionally completed for printing and which can most likely be dated to 1811 and 1813. The editorial report, the explanatory notes, and the letters printed in the appendix document the genesis of this major work from Schelling’s »middle« creative period.

Schelling’s estate, which has not yet been published in the historical-critical edition, will be published in approximately twelve volumes by Christoph Binkelmann, Christian Danz, and Philipp Schwab under the title »Münchener und Berliner Nachlass 1811–1854« (Munich and Berlin Estate 1811–1854) starting in 2026.
