The third volume of Frischlin’s poetry contains works from 1578 to 1585, the years marked by the poet’s growing conflicts with the University of Tübingen and the Württemberg nobility. These texts clearly reveal how the author gradually lost the circle of friends and patrons necessary for his occasional poetry. At times, the poetry loses significance in favor of philological scholarship and gradually adopts its polemical tone, so that Frischlin’s disappointments become increasingly apparent. The Latin texts are presented with a synoptic German translation and variants, and are contextualized and explained in a later commentary volume. This edition is intended for scholars and students of German studies, Neo-Latin studies, and early modern history.
