Volume XII,1 is dedicated to Carl Hauptmann’s journalistic texts. They form a significant part of his oeuvre and are summarized here for the first time in an edition. In addition to the writings published during his lifetime, the volume also contains unprinted texts from his estate that became publicly effective, such as the lectures. The works, which date from the turn of the century to the early 1920s, show the author in all the diversity of his artistic, aesthetic and political interests, which include, for example, developments in contemporary theater, the medium of film and literary expressionism as well as the problem of war and the reorganization of Germany in the wake of the November Revolution. This collection is not only of great relevance for understanding Carl Hauptmann’s literary oeuvre; it also provides valuable insights into an era characterized by cultural ruptures and social crises in which the ambivalence of modernism became increasingly apparent.
