Material on the history of universities is a type of source which up to now has not been studied sufficiently, although statutes, course catalogs, lecture announcements, letters of invitation, study regulations, study guides, matriculation registers, certificates of appointment and university senate documents etc. are all of considerable value. They provide us with detailed information about the biography and effectiveness of the scholars teaching at the university, convey an exact image of the teaching program and provide insight into the institutional and scholarly developments, trends and conflicts at European universities. – All of the sources published in this series have been made accessible and explained in introductions and indexes. Further research should be conducted in order to reevaluate the material, for example with regard to students’ catchment areas, appointments to two different universities, bans from teaching, conflicts among the faculty, interferences with academic freedom, handbooks on which lectures were based etc. – Historians of philosophy, science, medicine, law and the church are provided with an abundance of material and findings which will enable a more precise reconstruction of the contexts pertaining to the history of the sources and reception history.
