In their universal theories of Baroque science, Leibniz, Kircher and Comenius along with Alsted and Fludd employed a concept of science whose origins stretch back to Neoplatonic and Arabic philosophy. This concept is characterized by an attempt to deduct the entire domain of knowledge from a single principle. The Clavis Pansophiae series presents the outstanding works of this understanding of science, which was superseded by the mechanistic concepts of nature of the modern age as put forth by Mersenne, Gassendi and Descartes.
