In the 4th century AD, Dexippus wrote a commentary in three books on Aristotle’s ›Categories‹ in which he tried to refute Plotinus‘ objections to Aristotle’s theories. His commentary has been passed down to us in the form of a conversation he had with one of his students. In his remarks, Dexippus uses the commentaries written by Iamblichus and Porphyrios. The commentary reprinted here was translated in the Renaissance of the 16th century under the title ›In defensionem praedicamentorum Aristotelis adversus Plotinum‹ by Johannes Bernardus Felicianus, known for his subtle criticism of the commentary on Aristotle’s ›Ethics‹ (CAGL 11), which was ascribed to Eustratius.
