Hydrogen production by purple bacteria is tied to the strain. In a worldwide search for productive bacteria, the Meski strain (Southern Morocco) was isolated from 455 water samples. The Meski purple bacteria is being developed using evolution strategy, cultivated in tubular reactors and flat plate reactors, irradiated in a circadian rhythm, protected by carotenoid-like light filters and forced to produce hydrogen for weeks at a time without propagating. Pilot experiments show how in the future purple bacteria and green algae in an artificial symbiosis will be able to split water on an ongoing basis.
