Karl Leonhard Reinhold: Band 8

In 1796, Reinhold continued to work on his project, a »Draft for an Understanding,« which focused on evaluating common sense and sound reason, as well as the convictions of conscience that underlie every philosophical position. This was accompanied by plans for a book on Socrates and the publication of the »Proceedings.« Reinhold continues to defend consciousness as the foundation of philosophy, yet at the same time admits that he is finding it difficult to finish reading Fichte’s Science of Knowledge. 1796 is also the year of his personal reconciliation with Jacobi and of Baggesen’s return to Copenhagen; at the same time, his wife Sophie’s health is visibly deteriorating.
