Bekker‘s ›De Betoverde Weereld‹ is a pivotal text for the early European Enlightenment. With his systematic criticism of the demonology of his time, Bekker, a Cartesian, became the most influential conqueror of witchcraft and devil superstitions apart from Christian Thomasius and Friedrich von Spee. His impact, which was felt until the late 18th century, is documented in the editor’s introduction which contains previously unknown material and a bibliography.
