Bernard Bolzano: Band I,4: Athanasia oder Gründe für die Unsterblichkeit der Seele (Sulzbach 1827) mit Anhang zur zweiten Auflage der Athanasia (Sulzbach 1838)

Following Bolzano’s dismissal, Athanasia—the first of his major works—was published anonymously in 1827. Although this publication was inspired by the death of a daughter of Anna Hoffmann—who would later become his »life-sustainer«—it is not a book of consolation, but rather a theoretical exposition of the »Reasons for the Immortality of the Soul,« in which Bolzano clarifies, not least, fundamental concepts such as »substance« and »adherence.« A good decade later, Bolzano (now under his own name) published a second edition, which he expanded with new notes and commentaries on relevant recent publications. This edition serves as the basis for the present volume.
