Canzius (1690–1753) was a professor of rhetoric and poetry at the University of Tübingen. This work shows Canzius at the height of the philosophical and philological research of his time and on the threshold of the Age of Enlightenment. In 200 concisely written articles, he deals with the broad field of grammar at that time as well as linguistic philosophy, the theory of semiotics, phonetics, orthography, syntax, etymology, prosody and the study of verse.
