The visions of the Flemish mystic Hadewijch (13th century) provide some of the most significant literary and spiritual evidence of the Middle Ages. Using visually stunning images and with uncommon ruthlessness, Hadewijch describes the process of her mystical ascension. Her ›Book of Visions‹ is being published here for the first time in a modern, scholarly German translation. The introduction explains the fundamental terms and the main ideas of the work. The book contains a comprehensive commentary which puts the visions into the context of the history of thought on the basis of extensive sources. The commentary is supplemented by separate explanations of the content and the language as well as a critical inspection of the literature on this work. It also contains a bibliography and indexes.
