Volker Leppin: Spurensuche. Mystische Frömmigkeit in Mittelalter und Neuzeit

This volume brings together in-depth studies on the various facets of mysticism – from Francis of Assisi to Johann Sebastian Bach. The focus is on Mechthild of Magdeburg, Upper Rhenish mysticism, particularly Meister Eckhart and Johannes Tauler, and Martin Luther, whom this volume embeds deeply in late medieval mysticism. The reading gives an impression of the paths that mystical thinking has taken through the centuries. This thinking enables a Beguine to articulate herself theologically, deepens sacramental thinking in the Middle Ages and the Reformation, and finds expression in musical composition. In this way, the richness of Christianity’s mystical potential is vividly brought to life.
