The subject of this study is the reception of Gassendi in Britain in general and that of John Locke in particular. The reception of atomistic theories in England, which was about 180 years later than it was in continental Europe, shows the important role played in this by Gassendism. A distinctive common ground between the philosophies of Gassendi and Locke is shown to be the so-called theorem of the inverted spectrum. In a detailed analysis of both authors‘ concepts of truth, unexpected similarities come to light.
