In Jacobi›s time, the letter as a medium of communication had become more important that it had ever been before. There were however very few who had used this new medium to the extent that Jacobi had, and with the same mastery. This had not been clear until the publication of the new historical-critical edition of his correspondence, since half of the letters had not been published up to now or those published were garbled. The letters are now complete and have been provided with detailed commentaries. This enables the reader to understand Jacobi‹s outstanding role in the philosophical –literary discourse of his time. Among others, he corresponded with Goethe, Lessing, Hamann, Heinse, Lavater, Claudius, the Kreis von Münster (Münster Circle), Hemsterhuis, Wieland, F. L. Stolberg, Mendelssohn, Kant, Fichte, Reinhold, Schelling and Hegel.
