Melanchthon und die Naturwissenschaften seiner Zeit

Following the presentation of the Melanchthon Award in 1994, the Melanchthon House in Bretten organized an international conference in order to present more recent studies which showed what Melanchthon the reformer and the theologian thought about science and the humanities in his own time. The articles in this volume, which deal with a variety of disciplines such as theology, natural philosophy, mathematics, astrology, astronomy, medicine, geography and cosmography present an impressive picture of a scholar who by virtue of his untiring work and his comprehensive education in almost all fields of knowledge in the early modern era succeeded in combining the incipient reform movement in the 16th century with contemporary innovations in science and technology. The articles show that Melanchthon embodied a productive synthesis of Reformation and burgeoning science as almost no other scholar was able to do.
